The Art of the Box: Fantasy Computer Game Cover Art by Legendary Artists
Welcome, Adventurer . . .
Today we’re stepping into a time when fantasy computer games had a secret weapon: breathtaking box art.
Before high-resolution graphics, cinematic cutscenes, and sprawling open worlds, artists had a difficult task. They had to convince players that entire realms of adventure waited inside a cardboard box.
And they succeeded.
Join Rediscovered Realms as we explore dozens of fantasy game covers from The Art of the Box by Bitmap Books featuring dragons, warriors, wizards, monsters, and the artists who helped define how digital fantasy looked before most computers could properly display it.

When a Single Painting Could Launch a Thousand Adventures
For much of the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, fantasy computer games faced a challenge modern developers rarely encounter.
The worlds inside the game often couldn’t fully match the worlds players imagined.
Limited hardware meant crude sprites, simple animations, and tiny color palettes. The box art had to do the heavy lifting, promising dragons, sorcery, forgotten kingdoms, and heroic adventure long before a floppy disk ever spun to life.
The paintings collected in The Art of the Box capture much of that era beautifully (although many, many of my favorite computer box art illustrations and artists are not included. I’m particularly looking at you, Bard’s Tale!).
Created by artists from Europe, North America, and Japan, these illustrations weren’t merely packaging . . . they were portals to adventure.
While The Art of the Box celebrates game artwork from every corner of the hobby - from science fiction epics and racing games to military simulations and beyond—for today’s journey we’re staying firmly within the realms of fantasy. What follows is a curated expedition through dragons, warriors, wizards, monsters, and the legendary artists who brought them to life.
The Artists Behind the Adventure
The artwork featured in this edition comes from a remarkable collection of illustrators whose work helped define the visual identity of fantasy gaming.
Among them are fantasy art legends such as Julie Bell, Brom, Denis Loubet, and Frank Cirocco, alongside prolific game-cover artists including Lee MacLeod, Bob Wakelin, Tom DuBois, Dermot Power, Ken Macklin, Steve Hendricks, Dudu Torres, Charles Bae, and Susumu Matsushita.
Working across computer, console, and role-playing games, these artists created images that often became more memorable than the games themselves, fueling countless imaginations before the first loading screen ever appeared.
And there you have it. A gallery of fantasy worlds that existed long before most computers could properly render them.
Dragons towered. Heroes battled impossible odds. Serpents rose from crimson seas. Entire kingdoms waited beyond a cardboard lid and a handful of floppy disks or CDs.
For many of us, these paintings were our first glimpse of adventures we hadn’t yet experienced. They invited us to imagine worlds far grander than the technology of the day could deliver — and somehow that made them even more magical.
The games may have loaded one pixel at a time, but our imaginations never had such limitations.
