Mirth of Yore: Cartoons of Fantasy
Welcome, Adventurer . . .
Today we’re stepping into a lighter corner of the realms where wizards bungle spells, goblins get the last laugh, and even the darkest dungeons can’t escape a well-timed punchline.
We’re cracking open Mirth of Yore: Cartoons of Fantasy (1990), a delightful collection of single-panel comics compiled by James B. King, featuring over 90 black-and-white illustrations from some of the era’s most recognizable fantasy humorists.
Many of these artists - Darin Davis, Jerry Fuchs, Joseph Pillsbury, and Richard Tomasic - will feel familiar to anyone who spent time flipping through the pages of Dragon Magazine and other fantasy periodicals of the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Today, I’ve gathered 16 of my favorites for a fresh round of laughs from these old school realms of hilarity.
Come explore . . . and see which ones strike your funny bone.

Where Fantasy Meets Your Funny Bone
Before memes and internet punchlines, fantasy humor lived in the margins of magazines - quiet little panels tucked between epic articles and deadly encounters.
These cartoons didn’t just parody fantasy tropes - they understood them. They came from artists who knew the quirks of everyday life just as well as the realms of wizards, warriors, and wandering monsters . . . and delighted in letting those two worlds collide.
What follows is a handpicked tour through that humor - dry, clever, occasionally mischievous, and unmistakably old-school.
Artist Credits & Background
Darin Davis, Jerry Fuchs, Joseph Pillsbury, and Richard Tomasic were regular contributors to fantasy gaming periodicals throughout the 70s, 80s and early 1990s, with much of their work appearing in Dragon Magazine and similar publications.
Their cartoons were typically featured as single-panel gags — short, self-contained visual jokes that played off familiar fantasy tropes: overeager adventurers, misunderstood monsters, and wizards with questionable judgment.
Like many artists working in the RPG space at the time, their contributions were often unaccredited beyond brief bylines, and detailed biographical information is limited. However, their work formed a consistent part of the visual identity of these fantasy artifacts — adding humor and personality alongside rules, adventures, and lore.
These cartoons reflect a shared sensibility of the era: created by artists who were not just observers of fantasy worlds, but active participants in the culture surrounding tabletop gaming.
And there you have it - a glimpse into a time when even the most serious realms made room for a little mischief.
These cartoons may be simple in form, but they carry something lasting . . . a reminder that fantasy isn’t just about epic quests and looming darkness. It’s also about laughter shared around the table, inside jokes between adventurers, and the occasional witch who absolutely should not be trusted near an oven.
Long before scrolling feeds and endless content, these single panels delivered quick bursts of imagination and humor - small windows into worlds that didn’t always take themselves too seriously.
And perhaps that’s part of their magic . . .
They remind us that even in the tightest of dungeon chambers, there’s always room for a grin.
Keep your sense of humor, Adventurer.
