Who knew that the makers of Fighting Fantasy gamebooks published a short-lived magazine series in the 80s? Join Rediscovered Realms as we explore this newly acquired classic Warlock Magazine. Ready to start this week’s quest?
Thanks for the share. The First Quest album is wild. I sold my copy to Stu Horvath and he covered it on his Patreon, so it's cool to see Retroist do a piece as well. Natch, I gave them a follow.
Warlock! Now you're talking!! Found out recently that one of the art competition winners in this was a young Henry Flint who went on to become a legendary comic-book artist for 2000 AD!
Thanks for the overview on Warlock! I’ve had eBay saved searches for Warlock Magazine and First Quest for years now. Haven’t found either at the right price.
I hear you, Geoffrey! I made a fortunate purchase of Warlock #10 where it wasn't priced out of this world. Thanks for sharing the documentary about Knightmare - I'm adding it to my list to watch.
I saw the Twenty Sided Tavern last year. They really captured the goofiness of running a game with your friends, and had some fun audience participation. Glad to hear they landed an official D&D license!
No way! That's cool you got to see that, Jonah. I doubt I'll make it out there to watch it, but if they wind up forming a troupe and coming out west . . .
I remember owning issue 7 of Warlock magazine as it had the LOTR characters on the front and I kept it for ages. Lost now to the mists of time as usual
I had Warlock of Firetop Mountain and also Forest of Doom. Lone Wolf was my favourite though. Flight from Dark was a classic
Knightmare was good fun. It was between that and reruns of the D&D cartoon to keep us entertained back in the day 😁
Great article! I recognized the artwork on the cover of the horror issue (13) as being the same as the album cover of Abominog by Uriah Heep, which was released in 1982. The artist is Les Edwards and the piece was previously used for fiction book covers.

That's really cool, Christian, thanks for sharing!

That's awesome, Alec! It looks like his entry was in issue #9. I found a scan and emailed it to you. Thanks for letting me know. 🧙♂️
Brilliant! Cheers, J.Q.!
I would very much like to go to a Chaos Death Roadshow. If only cons had such cool names today!
lol Hugh! Something tells me that I'd know the general vicinity where you would land on the D&D alignment spectrum 😁 https://www.rediscoveredrealms.com/p/which-d-and-d-alignment-are-you-am-i-evil-now
I owned Warlock 1 and 2 but the shorteded games in them drove me CRAZY...
There was another one called Proteus right?
YES! I just encountered Proteus as well. I picked up a couple a few weeks back but haven't had a chance to look through them yet.

I just watched a comprehensive YouTube documentary about the making of Knightmare. Fascinating show! Really ahead of its time. https://youtu.be/6BF9GpcsJ5Q?si=QqP2vXuOxgOOVg1q
