THE NEWS:
Fantasy News Headline
I was going to end with this one, but it’s so darn cool that it just had to go in the lead. Anyone who has any affection or nostalgia for the old D&D cartoon HAS to give this a watch! AI? Yes. Awesomeness? Hell Yes!
“In a surprising turn of events, the popular fast food chain Wendy's has released an official pixelated RPG of its own, which takes heavy inspiration from classic turn-based JRPGs like Final Fantasy for its gameplay loop. Offered completely free on either Mobile or Steam, the WendyQuest RPG has about 10–15 hours of gameplay to offer.”
“Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern is an upcoming tavern-themed game set in the iconic Dungeons & Dragons universe, scheduled to release on Steam in 2027. Instead of embarking on dangerous adventures, players will experience a different side of the fantasy world, managing a tavern and serving the adventurers who pass through its doors.”
“For every incredible RPG, though, there is at least one RPG that isn't worth the price of admission. This list will break down 10 RPGs that are so bad they're completely unplayable. The term "unplayable" is, admittedly, being used loosely here. Some of these games literally can't be played anymore, while others suffer from poor controls or boring stories that make them a miserable experience from start to finish.”
“There are three new flavors of Sneak’s energy powder in the authentic Dungeons & Dragons Series, themed around the Mimic Chest, Mind Flayer, and Red Dragon, with each creature getting its own vividly illustrated tub and flavor. There are two tastes for Sneak Energy in Think Twice and Commanding Presence, and For The Elder Brain for Sneak Hydrate. There is also a special edition option of the Sneak Energy Drink in the incredibly eye-catching and more self-explanatory Dungeons & Dragons Citrus Quest.”
As you may already know, the latest Sarah J. Maas ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) book was recently released, with more on the way next year. Let the merchandising begin!
“Play-Doh has officially unveiled the first entry in its upcoming Blooms by Play-Doh line, and fans of ACOTAR won't want to miss it. The Play-Doh Blooms: A Court of Thorns and Roses craft kit is currently available for pre-order now, and is slated for release on Jan. 15, 2027, just three days after the seventh book in Sarah J. Maas' hit fantasy series arrives in stores.”
“Highlander is about to come back in a big way, as former Witcher star Henry Cavill reinvents the iconic fantasy franchise for a new generation. Cavill''s Highlander reboot has been long in the works, reviving the 1986 cult-classic, which sees an immortal Highlander warrior doing battle in the streets of a contemporary New York City.”
“High fantasy anime lovers often find themselves malnourished when it comes to the anime movie scene. Popular titles like Spirited Away, Your Name and My Neighbor Totoro certainly enrich the fantasy genre, but they are often considered urban-fantasy and low-fantasy. The truth is, high-fantasy anime movies are so rare, the number of good ones is incredibly limited.”
I was surprised at how much I actually liked this series. I started it early this year, watched a few episodes, then lost track. Picking it up again last month, it was crazy how the later season twists and unexpected developments made it go from “cozy” to “epic”. Definitely looking forward to season 2.
This was another unexpectedly good series in my opinion. It’s included on Amazon Prime for anyone interested. It’s based on Stephen R. Lawhead’s “Pendragon Cycle”.
“The Faithful and the Fallen author John Gwynne has now announced (via Josh Smith on Instagram) that a television adaptation of his epic fantasy book series is now in development. No other details have been provided as of this writing”
“Gwynne's The Faithful and the Fallen is a bestselling series consisting of the books Malice, Valor, Ruin, and Wrath, which were published from 2012-2016. They begin with a blacksmith's son named Corban, who aspires to become a soldier for King Brenin. He becomes embroiled in a prophecy that also involves the skilled swordsman Verandis, King Brenin's chief counselor Evnis, and Prince Nathair.”
“Moving away from the high stakes of epic fantasy narratives like Lord of the Rings, cozy fantasy books emphasize atmospheric, character-driven stories and focus on low-stakes, warm communities, and gentle magic. Plots in this surging sub-genre often center on slice-of-life narratives of domestic magic, mundane tasks, and small businesses through comforting tropes of found families and quiet emotional healing in quaint fantasy settings.”
Brand new book just released: The King Under the Mountain: In Search of J.R.R. Tolkien
“But Tolkien himself remains a mystery—a deeply conservative Oxford don specializing in an abstruse subject and a diehard Roman Catholic who regarded biography as a waste of time, was suspicious of literary criticism, and jealously guarded his private life from an intrusive media. Of no major twentieth century literary figure is so little known.”
“Dungeons & Dragons #1 from Dark Horse releases Wednesday, November 4th, featuring Mordenkainen stripped of his magical powers facing a draconic apocalypse”
According to Norse mythology, the universe was composed of nine realms, but what do we actually know about these mysterious worlds?

“A new study has attempted to reconstruct a lost poem by the ancient Greek poetess Corinna of Tanagra in Boeotia. According to an ancient source, she described the shield of Athena. This study examines the evidence for what that poem may have looked like. What has this new research uncovered?”
“The World of Warcraft x Dungeons & Dragons crossover book is packed with content that will enhance any game, even for people unfamiliar with Azeroth.”
“Wizards of the Coast is officially publishing Misplaced Monsters: Volume Two on December 02, 2026, bringing the new collection to the digital D&D Beyond platform. Like the first volume of Misplaced Monsters, which was released in 2023, this compendium shakes things up with “imaginative creatures dreamed up by children” rather than sticking to the mundane minds of adult designers. As a small supplement, no physical release is planned for the volume.”
“A new board game titled War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time has been picking up steam as the first-ever board game inspired by the hit fantasy franchise. The new release will put players directly in the middle of the epic conflict between Rand’al Thor (portrayed by Josha Stradowski in the show) and The Dark One. Over on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding campaign for the new Wheel of Time game has raised over $1.16 million from 6,156 donors at the time of writing, and it’s expected that the game will launch before the end of 2027.”

The wondrous history of fairy tale art – from wolves and witches to fallen princesses
“How do fairy tales, with roots reaching deep into the past, continue to cast their spell on us? This question animates The Art of Fairy Tales by Joanna Ebenstein. The book is a visual exploration of the ever-changing lives that fairy tales take on through the imagination of artists.”

A new plugin called Atlas VTT (Virtual Tabletop) brings many of those same Roll20 features right into Obsidian, including a separate view for players and DMs. It's honestly one of the most impressive Obsidian plugins I've seen, and that's saying something, considering how many I've experimented with.” - Patrick Hearn
“Hear ye, hear ye. A new collective cultural hyperfixation is sweeping through mass media, but it’s not exactly new—in fact, it’s one of the most romanticized periods in human history. There appears to be a Renaissance period renaissance happening right now, with medieval motifs, courtly aesthetics, and old-world extravagance cropping up everywhere from fashion and music to film and television. Is this ye olde resurgence simply the result of the trend cycle circling back (waaaay back) to yesteryear, or is there something more psychologically revealing beneath all that velvet and chain mail?”

Research shows that engaging in hobbies is linked to fewer depressive symptoms and better physical health.
Being recognized for one’s hobby can maximize its psychological perks.
Based on its benefits, the development of hobbies could be as important as the attention one puts on a career.
