I was sad to sell my Mongoose copies, but the new editions are beautiful and continue the legacy with class.

Hey JQ,

Grey Star is my favourite series ever. Best combat system of any gamebook Ive ever read. I enjoy the Lone wolf series too and Ive been slowly working my way through the series on my Kindle. It was great of Joe Dever to make them available. RIP.

I heard about the Huntress on Demian's site. I've been looking into it because it sounds awesome. I can't even find it on Amazon.

Great topic as always.

Thanks, Kveto! You're correct - the new Huntress series is only available on Holmgard Press' website at the moment. I've got Grey Star on my shortlist of gamebooks to re-read since I don't remember them as well as Lone Wolf.

Right on, Eric! I hadn't played the video game version yet. I'll have to check it out.

It's a really nice via media between the game book and video game mediums. Combat is fun, engaging, and dangerous

The Action system is pretty intuitive, though I've not quite deciphered how the stats work. I've also been playing the Fabled Lands video game. It's a well done system that really highlights the great elements of the game books.

Thanks Eric. I've heard of Fabled Lands but also have yet to try that one out too. I'm starting a "video game to play" list now!

I hear you Ian - I was the same, but Jonathan let me buy a set from his stash where I saved a little bit.

Thank you, Wesley! Yeah, it's getting rarer these days to see those magnificent lone wolves in the wild. Such a solitary yet magnificent creature.

I have so many fond memories of the Lone Wolf books from when I was young (which feels like I very long time ago now)!

That's great, David. I didn't get to play/read that many as a kid, but the ones I had always stuck with me. A long time ago is right. I'm constantly amazed at how much time has passed. I'm still trying to figure out how to make a time machine and go back . . .

Thanks Mark! In a way, I guess all these fantasy books, games, magazines, movies & toys serve as a sort of Fountain of Youth for me. A reawakening & reconnection to seemingly simpler yet joyous times.

These were the books that got me into reading as a boy. Absolutely hooked me from the first page. Not as punishing as Fighting Fantasy either!

That is such a great testament, Rhys! Fantasy books are what got me hooked on reading as well. These Lone Wolf books were definitely part of that journey, along with Endless Quest, Chronicles of Narnia, Dragonlance, and Fighting Fantasy (which as you stated, could be brutal!)

Lone Wolf was a huge find for me as a kid, the fact the books had continuity within a bigger world was awesome, and something Fighting Fantasy didn't really have... I'd seen those (lovely) hard cover reprints, but didn't know about The Huntress series... fortunately I'm in the UK so might give them a look - thanks for the heads up!

I love that you mentioned "continuity", Ed. I remember thinking that was the coolest thing ever back in the day. Definitely check magnamund.com - and I bet eBay.co.uk and amazon.co.uk might have some of these floating around too. Oh - and make sure to tune in next week for Jonathan Stark's interview. Cheers!

One of my biggest regrets was selling my Joe Dever collection by in 2002 or 2003 on eBay. I had the American paperbacks of Lone Wolf 1-12, Grey Star 1-4, Highway Warrior 1-4, and the Magnamund Companion. I think I maybe sold them for $50-75. I wish I had them all now. Glad the definitive versions are out and new Magnamund material is being made.
