Crack open this classic TSR supplement from 1977, and you’ll find more than just monsters and loot — you’ll uncover a trove of old-school D&D artwork! With pieces from David C. Sutherland III, David A. Trampier, Bill Willingham, Tom Wham, and Jeff Dee, Monster & Treasure Assortment is a visual time capsule of early TSR fantasy. Join Rediscovered Realms and take a closer look at the illustrations lurking within!
What a *wonderful* wander down memory lane. A thing I really admire about the foundations TSR laid was a consistency of art style (which D&D still adheres to - open your 4e books and you'll find them different to 3e through tonal shift). I fell down a well when my copy of the OG rules arrived (courtesy of DriveThruRPG) and there are still these wonderful old pieces of art.
There's a level of creativity on display, or perhaps rawness of essence? It was all black and white / two-tone, and they needed to get across the essence of, say, a mimic without being able to use a different colour for the tongue 🤣
There's always something classic about the DnD artwork and it's interesting to see how the appearance of different creatures or environments have changed over the years. Also meant to say earlier thanks for the awesome music it was my playlist while I finished up an entry for a miniatures painting competition.
Absolutely with you, Retroist! It's like this art style has burrowed into my brain and anything slightly similar I see releases a flood of "Oh Cool!" endorphins.
Hi Pat. Thanks for reaching out. Apologies - I have been sooooooo behind in messages, emails, and the like.
Someone else reached out to me to let me know some people may be trying to spoof Rediscovered Realms on Facebook. I spent a bunch of time going down that rabbit hole with FB support and trying to track them/block them, but didn't get anywhere.
Let me know if you still have an issue with the spoofer and I will see what I can do to get it resolved.
I appreciate you trying to reach out to me, and apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused.
I absolutely love old school DND art, but also all kinds of fantasy black and white sketches. I think it sets a certain type of mood. It also works really well for GrimDark stuff too. 😊
I'm with you, Robin. I LOVE fantasy black/white line art. I think I just realized that for me it also evokes a connection to the past woodcut style illustrations (1200's+ in Europe - 200's+ in China!) and therefore feels a bit more historically grounded.

Well said, Richard! 🧙♂️

Awesome - thanks Eric! Glad you liked the music.
Maybe because I grew up with it, but these early modules and supplements where they just use one additional color is extremely satisfying.

Please respond to my FB message to you. It may be in your spam bin. Cheers - Pat

Yes! Old wood cuts (and new ones) are so cool!
