In honor of April 1st, what could be better than getting our “gullible” on with Rediscovered Realms and seeing some of the devious (and sometimes ludicrous) fantasy RPG trap designs & artwork from that old rascally troll, Grimtooth?
Didn’t know about these. I shared them with my 13 year old and I have a feeling his next DM experience will have more traps and tricks. His eyes sparkled as he read the article 🤩
I use very few traps in my games nowadays, but I loved the books when I was younger and used them frequently. Dealing with traps has never been something my players have ever been good at.
Makes me sad since so much of the "Dungeons" portion of the game could be these fun traps to figure out.
I had 1 and 2 back in the 90s and used a number of the less deadly one. I used the fishing one that shot you into the air, i remember that one... and the telescope that had a pop out blade in it...
What happend was that we had a really greedy player no one liked - he was a treasure grabber! I told everyone to let him grab the jeweled telescope and look through it!
I told him that as he looked in it - it seemed like he could see a man lying on his back with something protruding from his eye... but he would have to focus it to get a better look ...

And Elmstud the 3rd level greedy wizard was gone.
He was back playing rugby and calling us nerds within 48 hours !
LOL - yes, as a player, once you became aware of the possibility of these traps, it made you VERY wary! DM: "Who wants to enter the room first?" All Players At Once: "Not me!"
Always love a deadly and intricate Trap
Perhaps your family tree may include some of Grimtooth's kin up the line somewhere? 😁

Moohahaha! Sounds like your 13-year-old is going to be an EXCELLENT Dungeon Master!
DM: "What's the marching order?"
ALL PLAYERS AT ONCE: "Not it!"

Throw them a pure sodium nymph statue under a water feature now and again, and I bet they'll start getting better at dealing with traps!

and the coins that were bugs :)
Cool! I bet your players are still wary any time they look through a telescope in real life!

LOL! That is classic. 😁
I love it! It’s like D&D by way of classic MAD Magazine.
That's a perfect characterization, Geoffrey - I love it!
