On the cusp between 1979 and 1980, Games Workshop was busy at work with their imaginative creations, including the 16th edition of their premier fantasy games magazine, “White Dwarf”. These old school editions are superior to their evolved namesake in every way. Join Rediscovered Realms as we explore this time capsule from the golden age of fantasy games.
It is interesting to see how interconnected all the different games and companies were in the beginning. Reading some of the old Dungeon magazines, even Battletechnology for those old MechWarriors out there, you see a "if we work together we all succeed" idea in the beginning.
YES! Totally agree, Eric. I'm sure there was a little bit of, "don't p*ss off the Giant" as well, but it did definitely seem a bit more collaborative on certain fronts back in those earlier days.
I dug out my old copies of White Dwarf after I read this but they don’t go that far back!
Imagine bringing Thomas Covenant into the D&D world. Would that mean that your characters would need to be completely insufferable and mutter “Hellfire!” every time they spoke whilst having a “mouthful of ash” 😁
I found issue 85 of White Dwarf which brilliantly had Carl Critchlow doing a Thrud the Barbarian and Judge Dredd crossover!
Loved the song this week by the way . Great stuff 👍🏼
I forgot about Thrud! He didn't show up in this issue - I wonder when they started with him? I'll have to peek through some of my other earlier editions.
Glad you liked the song. I particularly like this one, too. (Was just re-listening to it today!)
We only had one gaming store in our area that would get issues of White Dwarf. Usually months after they had been printed a handful of the issues would show up near the register. If we you were lucky to be around and pick one up, it was like seeing a whole different world of gaming.
Aw, man. I bet that had to be thrilling to be able to grab one of those rare few that would appear on that counter! Definitely a different, but complementary world of gaming housed within those pages.
i had a gaming store at Woodmar mall in Hammond, Ind. that carried White Dwarf, but i had to wait for a license and a car to be able to get there, or if on the off chance my mom had to make a run there. i still had a decent collection of WD from 81-83 or so, along with my Dragons, Dungeons and a few wargaming periodicals

What a great find J.Q. 😃

LOL about yelling "Hellfire!", Dan!

Talk soon, Dan!

How cool your local store carried White Dwarf, Heavy Cavalry (and you still have a bunch!)
Love those old magazines. Very nice piece!
