REDISCOVERED RELIC: Dungeons & Dragons Hot Dogs?
No, Oscar Mayer didn't sell edible dragons. But in Spain during 1985, buying hot dogs, salami, bacon and bologna could help you complete one of the most unusual Dungeons & Dragons collectibles ever produced.
Inside specially marked Oscar Mayer packages, children found collectible cards, then pasted them into this beautiful album based on the beloved Dungeons & Dragons animated series.
Sold through bookstores and newsstands, the album contains space for 300 cards. The finished result is a visual retelling of thirteen episodes from the show’s first two seasons, and one of the strangest — and most charming — licensed fantasy collectibles I've ever added to my collection.

Looking through this album reminded me how differently licensed collectibles worked during the 1980s. Instead of apps, digital rewards, or QR codes, adventures often arrived tucked inside cereal boxes and sometimes . . . lunch meat packages.
For one generation of Spanish fantasy fans, completing a Dungeons & Dragons collection meant convincing their parents to buy a couple hundred more packages of Oscar Mayer processed meat.
The cholesterol may have been legendary... but so was the collection.
