From the Vaults of TSR’s Imagination

There’s something different about the CATACOMBS books.

They weren’t pocket-sized adventures like Fighting Fantasy or Endless Quest. These were big, oversized portals meant to be spread out, studied, and explored like ancient tomes. Each page feels less like a step in a story and more like a chamber in a living maze.

Faerie Mound of Dragonkind leans fully into that atmosphere. Clyde Caldwell’s cover alone sets the tone: mystical, dangerous, alluring— and inside, Valerie Valusek’s black-and-white illustrations bring the faerie realm to life with dreamlike wonder and dread.

Feasts, ruins, strange encounters, quiet moments of beauty . . . and just enough danger lurking beneath it all.

I never played this one back in the day.

But boy, did I always want to.

Flipping through it now feels like finally stepping into a place I’d already visited a hundred times in my mind.

Now, let’s take a look at some of my favorite Valerie Valusek illustrations in this gamebook.

I didn’t know Billy Zane was a Fae!

And there you have it - a glimpse into a faerie realm, but D&D CATACOMBS style!

The CATACOMBS books may not be remembered for their gameplay, but their artwork? That’s another story entirely. These pages are filled with imagination, atmosphere, and that unmistakable old-school magic that lingers long after the book is closed.

For those who noticed a couple blurred-on-purpose books in this edition’s cover image, we’ll be returning to this series soon (🤫there are two more fantasy-themed CATACOMBS books waiting to be explored!)

A Dragon That Didn’t Feel Like Fantasy

In 1981, Dragonslayer arrives as something different - darker, grittier, and more grounded than the fantasy films surrounding it.

And within these pages, you can feel the excitement.

This isn’t a polished retrospective . . . it’s a moment in time. A magazine capturing the wonder of a film as it hits audiences, complete with dramatic write-ups, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and awe-struck admiration for Vermithrax Pejorative, one of the most convincing dragons ever put to screen.

About Dragonslayer

Released in 1981, Dragonslayer arrives from Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions as a darker, more dangerous take on fantasy.

Directed by Matthew Robbins and featuring groundbreaking effects by Phil Tippett, the film follows a young apprentice tasked with slaying Vermithrax Pejorative - one of the most fearsome dragons ever brought to life.

Even today, its blend of grit, magic, and realism gives it a legendary reputation among fantasy fans.

Personal Reflections on Watching Dragonslayer as a Kid

I still remember the first time I watched Dragonslayer - and how different it felt from everything else.

This wasn’t bright, heroic fantasy. It was darker. Heavier. Frankly, it scared the heck out of me.

It was the kind of world where magic came with a cost . . . and dragons weren’t symbols, they were threats. The kind of story where it felt like the hero was all on his own and there were real consequences to his choices.

Vermithrax didn’t feel like something out of a storybook. It felt like something that shouldn’t exist, yet somehow did.

And then there was that moment.

(SPOILER ALERT)

Walking through the dank lair, crunching on discarded dragon scales and human bones, coming upon the baby dragons feasting . . . on the remains of a sacrificed maiden . . . a scene that didn’t just shock me . . . it lingered. The kind of image that sticks in your mind long after the credits roll. (My therapist tells me I’m getting better.)

But alongside that fear was something else entirely.

Wonder.

There was true magic. And Galen’s crystal, quietly glowing with hidden power, felt like the most magical object I had ever seen. Not flashy. Not over-the-top. Just . . . ancient, mysterious, and real. The kind of thing that made you want to go outside, turn over stones, to find your very own magic crystal.

Looking back now, I think Dragonslayer didn’t just show me a fantasy world . . .

It made me believe that it could exist.

There’s something special about seeing a film through the lens of its own time - before nostalgia sets in, before reputations are written.

Just raw excitement . . . a dragon that must be appeased . . . and a magazine trying to capture lightning in a bottle.

Dragonslayer may not sit at the top of modern fantasy lists, but for me, it will always be one of the best fantasy movies ever made (along with Clash of the Titans which came out in the same exact month!) Re-watching it last year solidified that fact in my mind.

  • “In 1656, Karin Svensdotter stood trial in the southern Swedish village of Sävsjö on an unusual charge: fornication with supernatural beings. Specifically, the court was investigating the young housemaid’s claims that she had a relationship with the King of the Fairies.

    Svensdotter testified that several years before, she had been approached by a handsome man dressed in gold who called himself the Älvakungen, meaning “Elf King.” (Elf can be used generically for all humanlike spirits of nature, similar to the term fairy). He led her into the forest, to a great hall hidden beneath a mountain, where they danced and reveled with other elves in fine clothes. After this, Svensdotter said, her otherworldly lover began to visit regularly. Their relationship resulted in seven children, but each time Svensdotter gave birth, the Elf King appeared and carried the baby off to his own realm, despite her protestations. Witnesses testified that they had seen Svensdotter experience exhausting physical fits, which she described as labor pains, and heard her wandering the forest at night in search of her stolen children. When Adventure Games Ruled the Realms

Published by TSR UK in the 1980s, Imagine Magazine was a sister publication to Dragon Magazine - packed with adventures, articles, comics, and a distinctly British flavor of fantasy role-playing.

But just as memorable as the content itself were the margins of the magazine - the ads, illustrations, and strange little glimpses into the hobby as it existed in its early days.

That’s what we’re exploring today.

This is probably one of the coolest D&D ads I have seen. Maybe because I love the artwork across the top. Anyone know where that came from? Seems like maybe a cover of Dragon Magazine?

I always appreciate the 2-tone colors in some of the old school fantasy products. Just a little red+black or green+black seems to make things pop tremendously.

Blending real-world mythology/history into Fantasy RPGs was also something that felt extra cool.

Similar to the 2-tone ink colors, when magazines and supplements included a few pages of colored paper, it really kicked up the visual appeal.

What is Invincible Overlord?

Before sprawling campaign settings became standard, Mayfair’s City-State of the Invincible Overlord carved out its own corner of the fantasy RPG world.

Originally inspired by Judges Guild’s classic city supplements, this series expanded into a full campaign setting — Calandia — where each boxed set zoomed in on a different region.

What made it special?

• Modular regional design (drop-in friendly)

• Heavy emphasis on politics, factions, and economy

• A blend of wilderness adventure + structured society

• System-flexible DNA (though rooted in AD&D-style play)

Each supplement, like Betrayal at Bogwater, was both playable adventure and worldbuilding expansion.

What’s in the Box

This isn’t just an adventure - it’s a modular sandbox.

Betrayal at Bogwater follows Mayfair’s signature format: part setting guide, part scenario, part toolbox. You’re not just running a story - you’re stepping into a living region.

What makes Betrayal at Bogwater interesting isn’t just the adventure - it’s the layered design philosophy:

• You’re given a region, not just a quest

• The adventure emerges from politics, trade, and corruption

• Encounters feel like part of a living ecosystem (especially with the references to past adventures in the series)

Robert Gould (cover artist), Curt Chiarelli (interior artist), and Jerry O’Malley (cartography) are credited for the visual and map design work in Betrayal at Bogwater (1988), published by Mayfair Games.

These artists contributed to multiple products in Mayfair’s City-State of the Invincible Overlord campaign line during the late 1980s, helping define the look and structure of the Calandia setting.

Like many RPG creators of the era, detailed individual credits outside of these publications are limited. Their work is most consistently documented within Mayfair releases themselves, where they appear across guidebooks, adventures, and regional map materials.

Together, their contributions form the visual backbone of Mayfair’s Invincible Overlord line - less about individual spotlight, and more about supporting the game at the table.

Fun Fact!: The Naga illustrated above, was also featured in this little-known 1951 film:

Mail-Order Magic

Early editions of City-State of the Invincible Overlord included involvement and endorsement from Gary Gygax, lending credibility and visibility to the line.

However, as the industry evolved - and TSR’s ecosystem became more defined - those connections faded. Later Mayfair products (including this 1988 era) leaned more into their own identity, though the DNA of early D&D-style play is still very present.

Every Tour Must End . . .

Well, Adventurer, we have reached the bottom of the box, with nothing left inside except for the plain brown cardboard staring blankly back at me in the flickering torchlight. But what a glorious box it was!

There was a time when opening a box like this felt like unlocking a world.

Maps to unfold. Pages to study. Possibilities to imagine long before dice ever hit the table.

Betrayal at Bogwater carries that feeling - the sense that adventure isn’t just something you play, but something you build, piece by piece.

And maybe that’s the real treasure here.

In 1979, Warren Publishing — the legendary house behind Eerie, Creepy, and Vampirella — released a fantasy anthology magazine called Ring of the Warlords, bringing together six sword-and-sorcery tales illustrated by some of the era’s greatest fantasy artists.

In this edition of Rediscovered Realms, we take a visual journey through the magazine’s pages, featuring art from Esteban Maroto, Wally Wood, Gonzalo Mayo, and more — all framed beneath a striking cover by Sanjulian.

As a bonus, I’ve included the entire story “The Curse”, written and illustrated by the legendary Wally Wood, along with a tour of the wonderfully nostalgic advertisements that showcase some of the era’s most popular fantasy, horror and sci-fi collectibles.

Enter the Ring

Published in January 1979 by Warren Publishing, Warren Presents: Ring of the Warlords was part of the company’s line of black-and-white fantasy and horror magazines that flourished during the 1970s. Unlike traditional comic books, these magazines were printed in a larger magazine format, allowing artists greater freedom with darker themes, elaborate artwork, and longer stories.

The issue gathers six fantasy stories from creators associated with the Warren magazines and the European fantasy art scene, including Esteban Maroto, Gonzalo Mayo, and Wally Wood. The striking painted cover was created by the Spanish fantasy master Sanjulian, whose dramatic covers became iconic during the magazine’s run.

Artist Spotlight: Sanjulian

Manuel Pérez Clemente — better known as Sanjulian — is one of the great masters of fantasy magazine cover art. Born in Barcelona in 1941, he became internationally known during the 1970s for his striking painted covers for Warren Publishing magazines such as Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella.

Sanjulian’s style blends classical painting techniques with dramatic fantasy imagery. His figures often appear sculptural and powerful, illuminated by bold lighting and rich colors that leap from the page.

The cover of Ring of the Warlords captures this perfectly — a haunting gathering of monsters and dark figures emerging from the gloom, promising readers that the pages within hold strange worlds and dangerous adventures.

Did You Know? — Warren Publishing

Warren Publishing helped change the comic industry in the 1960s and 70s.

Because their publications were printed as magazines rather than comic books, they were not bound by the Comics Code Authority — the censorship system that restricted traditional comics for decades.

This allowed Warren magazines like:

• Creepy

• Eerie

• Vampirella

. . . to explore darker stories, mature themes, and more experimental artwork.

The large magazine format also gave artists more space to create detailed black-and-white illustrations, which became one of the defining visual styles of fantasy and horror comics of the era.

Many legendary artists and writers passed through Warren’s pages, making the magazines an important bridge between pulp fantasy, European comics, and the emerging fantasy boom of the 1970s.

Artist Spotlight: Esteban Maroto

Spanish artist Esteban Maroto became one of the defining illustrators of sword-and-sorcery comics during the 1970s. His work appeared frequently in Warren magazines, where his elaborate style and imaginative character designs stood out immediately.

Maroto’s art often features flowing hair, intricate armor, exotic landscapes, and beautifully composed figures — blending classical fantasy imagery with a uniquely European sense of elegance and atmosphere.

His contributions to Warren’s magazines helped define the visual language of fantasy comics during the era.

Artist Spotlight: Gonzalo Mayo

Gonzalo Mayo was another Spanish artist who became closely associated with Warren Publishing’s magazines during the 1970s. Like many artists working with Warren, Mayo brought a strong European comics influence that added sophistication and variety to the magazine’s stories.

His illustrations combine expressive character work with clean, dramatic compositions — perfect for the dark fantasy tales that filled Warren’s pages.

Though sometimes less widely known than some of his contemporaries, Mayo’s work helped shape the rich visual identity of Warren’s fantasy anthologies.

Artist Spotlight: Wally Wood

Wally Wood (1927–1981) is widely regarded as one of the most influential comic artists of the 20th century. His career spanned science fiction, superheroes, satire, and fantasy, with memorable work appearing in EC Comics, MAD Magazine, Daredevil, and numerous independent publications.

Wood was famous for his meticulous line work and dramatic use of black and white contrast — a style perfectly suited to the large-format black-and-white magazines produced by Warren Publishing.

In Ring of the Warlords, Wood both writes and illustrates “The Curse,” a haunting sword-and-sorcery tale that showcases his ability to combine eerie atmosphere with powerful storytelling.

The Curse — Wally Wood

Among the treasures hidden within Ring of the Warlords is this eerie sword-and-sorcery tale by comic legend Wally Wood, who both wrote and illustrated the story.

He wove a tale where dark magic and grim destiny lurk just beyond the torchlight.

When I first read this not too long ago, it felt like it would have fit perfectly in an episode from The Creepshow or Tales from the Crypt.

Artifacts from the Age of Fantasy

The advertisements in magazines like Ring of the Warlords are little time capsules — revealing the games, books, posters, and collectibles that fueled the imagination of fantasy fans in the late 1970s.

It may be a fever dream, but I think I had those sheets as a kid!

The sci-fi series, Battlestar Galactica, was in 1978-1979, so it makes sense the Galactic Wars Comix was created to capitalize on that publicity!

Memory unlocked! I remember making vehicles from the Star Wars Punch-Out Book (and I still have my beaten-up copy of the Star Wars Pop-Up book!)

“Superman The Movie” was a huge hit released in 1978, which explains all these merchandising ads.

Magazines like Ring of the Warlords remind us that the golden age of fantasy didn’t live only in novels and role-playing games — it thrived in the pages of bold magazines filled with daring artists and strange worlds.

These stories carried the spirit of sword and sorcery forward through the late 1970s, bridging the worlds of pulp fantasy, comics, and the growing imagination of gamers and readers alike.

As many of you know, I had the privilege of not only interviewing Rose Estes a couple years back, but of also spending time with her and her son, Daniel, at last year’s Gary Con. It was one of the best experiences of my life - a time I will always cherish.

Unfortunately, Daniel passed away only a few short months later after bravely battling a resurgence of cancer that he kept private. Daniel was one of the kindest, most vivacious people I had ever met. I only learned of his passing recently, and still haven’t come to terms with it. I am truly sorry for Rose and family.

• A new kid-friendly (but safe enough for adults!) line of official D&D toys has just been unveiled - “Dungeons & Dragons Questers”

  • Coming this summer, "The line will feature three separate types of figures based on D&D lore: Creatures, Adventurers and Monsters. All figures will be blind-packed collectibles and fully buildable, with interchangeable parts that allow kids to mix and match to make their own creations. Each figure will also include a D20 dice and “storystarter” book that encourages them to create their own tales (although it’s not entirely clear what these will look like).”

    These pursuits are different from casual hobbies in several ways. They require participation over longer periods, which makes people who practice them more skilled and more connected with the activity over time. You’ll find heroes defiant. Monsters enormous. Damsels imperiled (and often doing the imperiling). Fear, surprise, defiance — every emotion painted at full radio volume.

Pure Fantasy Fuel from the Pulp Era

Beneath all the painted drama was a real magazine, printed on real pulp paper and stacked on real newsstands across America. Fantastic Adventures first appeared in 1939, published by Ziff-Davis during the height of the pulp era.

It ran through 1953, blending fantasy, adventure, weird menace, and the occasional dash of science fiction for readers hungry for escape in uncertain times.

Prominent authors who had work published in Fantastic Adventures included Edgar Rice Burroughs, Nelson S. Bond, Edmond Hamilton, Robert Bloch, Don Wilcox, August Derleth, Rog Phillips, Theodore Sturgeon, Walter M. Miller, Jr., Fritz Leiber, L. Sprague de Camp, and Ray Bradbury.

Inside its pages lived tales of lost civilizations, ancient curses, cosmic threats, and jungle empires — but it was the covers that did the shouting. Bold, theatrical, impossible to ignore, they promised danger, romance, and wonder before a single page was turned.

Behind every lunging dragon, powerful goddess, and shadowed temple stood the unsung heroes of the pulp age — the illustrators. Artists like J. Allen St. John, Margaret Brundage, Virgil Finlay, H.W. McCauley, Raymond Naylor, Robert Gibson Jones, Walter Parke, Frank R. Paul, Malcolm Smith and many others shaped the visual language.

Working fast, they painted bold compositions designed to stop a passerby mid-stride at a newsstand. Their work was dramatic, exaggerated, sometimes outrageous — and foundational to the fantasy imagery that would inspire and echo through generations of artists, right down to today.
